The 613 Commandments - Yahuwah's Law/Instructions - Explained - by Jennifer Lang

The 613 Commandments - Yahuwah's Law/Instructions - Explained

The law isn’t as difficult as you may think!

In this last section I want to show you that the law is not so scary as many think! There really aren’t that many of the 613 commandments that we are expected to keep, because so many of them do not apply to us. Here is a quote that will help you understand this:

From shulcloud dot com:

“There are 613 commandments in the Torah: -248 positive commandments (do's) and -365 negative commandments (dont's).

How many commandments apply today?

of the 613 commandments, -only 411 don't require the Temple (202, or about a third, do);

of these, only 369 commandments are applicable today (42 pertain to slaves, kings, nazirs, etc.);

of these, only 270 apply always, regardless of circumstances (99 require special circumstances, e.g., "don’t be late in fulfilling a vow" applies only if you make a vow; likewise, parapet around roof, paying laborer on time, etc.);

of these, only 244 apply outside Israel. (26 apply only in Israel.)

So, for most Jews (or believers), only 244, of 40%, of the mitzvot apply.”

Now to take this a step further, MANY of these that do apply are things that we as believers who love and respect Yahuwah/Yahushuwa would obey naturally, such as “don’t kick the cane out from under a blind man”, “don’t move your neighbor’s property boundary markers”, “don’t have sexual relations with an animal, a relative, etc.”,

I’m including this list of the 613 commandments that was prepared by a Jewish man long ago and my notes are added to explain some of them, to show you what this mysterious list consists of. When believers in Messiah are told they need to obey these commandments they usually reject the idea before they even consider learning what they are all about. They are over-whelmed by them. But the list isn’t so scary when you actually see it and realize that a large part of them are not applicable presently because they are about the Levitical Priesthood and the Temple and animal sacrifices, of which don’t exists, and the legal system which is not presently in force, a large part of them are practical and moral things that believers adhere to naturally without even reading them, and there aren’t so many that we do not naturally know or practice, that we have to read and learn, such as keeping the 7th day Sabbath holy, doing the feast days, the dietary instructions, refraining from idolatry and paganism, and a few other things, none of which are hard to do. These are categorized by subject to make it easier to separate which apply to us and which do not.

This list will take some of the fear of the ‘law’ out of the way, and let you know it’s not as hard as you thought it was. And then I show another list of just the chapter and verse of each, in order of occurrence, that you can go through and study in context, because that flows better and you’ll already know which ones you probably do not need to worry about, from reading the first list.

Study to show yourselves approved. Do the commandments that apply to you. Read about and respect the ones that do not apply. This is between you and Yahuwah. I am not an authority on these laws by any means, and you must study them for yourself. I’m just helping you to see that some of them apply to you and some of them do not. So study them for yourself, and pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you in understanding.

I put in red the chapter and verse, and the Jews’ interpretation of the verses, when they may apply to believers presently, and in black when they may not apply, the actual Scriptures in black, and added my notes in green when it needed more clarification.

In conclusion, don’t forget the Ten Commandments:

Exodus 20 King James Version

20 And Yahuwah spake all these words, saying,

2 I am Yahuwah thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I Yahuwah thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of Yahuwah thy God in vain; for Yahuwah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of Yahuwah thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days Yahuwah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore Yahuwah blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which Yahuwah thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill. (meaning murder)

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

And the instructions in the New Testament (and most of them are clarifications of the instructions in the Old Testament.) We should make time to study the complete Bible and grow as we learn. Yahuwah is patient and will help us. Obeying Him, to the best of our knowledge and ability is how we show our love for Him, and it’s how we have more successful lives. It does take time and effort, but it is rewarding and pleasant. It’s been suggested by some leaders that you start out observing the 7th day Sabbath, the Feast Days, the dietary instructions, giving up the pagan holidays (Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentine Day, May Day, etc.) – and then begin to learn the other laws that apply, you’ll be off to a good start.
